Taking Care of the Elderly

Taking care of the Elderly

Taking care of someone or a loved one is something very nice to do and it comes from the heart. A caregiver is one of the very many people living on this physical plane that makes the life worth living.

Taking care of anybody is not an easy task because it requires patience, endurance and tolerance. That’s why most of the time, the only people good at this doing are those who take it as hobby.

Doing something that makes you happy or something you derive joy from is the only thing that yields better results.

Everybody has different kinds of gifts and calling and if you happen to have an elderly person around you, it takes a whole lot of patience, endurance and tolerance to be good at being a caregiver.

How to handle the Elderly and give them the needed care

First of all, there is something you need to understand when taking care of the elderly ones. The reason why some of them seem to behave like kids is that the brain no longer functions like those of active people. Some cells are dead and cannot be revived easily.

Secondly, you should have it at the back of your mind that depression plays a role in this. On myemeraldhealth you can read a lot on depression. Why did say this? This is because, some of them are not ready to leave the physical earth. When they remember that their presence will soon depart from the mother earth and they cannot understand what the land of the great beyond looks like, fear, anxiety and depression set in.

Not every older folks has this to worry, in fact I have seen some of them while I was growing up, where they will call on death to come take them simply because they are tired of the whole scenario. Out of frustration and may be they are not getting what they desired which is still the care-giving, they seem to transfer the aggression to themselves thereby everything is not pleasing to them and they feel like they are the cause of everything.

I want to let you know that my late grandmother called on death to come take her because she was fed up. She turned lamented and sang various songs of sorrow. Sometimes, she’d tell people around that before those that went to market could come back that she’d be long gone to the land of no return, and guess what? They would come back from the market and she was still alive lamenting.

Pamper the Older Ones when taking care of them

They elder people I encountered were hard nuts to crack and they never made things easier especially for those taking care of them. When their grown up children who lived in the city refused to play the necessary roles, they would rant and curse the entire family. Sometimes, they assumed that the women their sons married must have had a hand in making their children to not take care of them.

The following are some the things you would need to do in order to achieve better results when taking care of the elder:

·        If you pet and pamper them, they feel happy.

·        Tell them stories like you do kids

·        Listen to them even when what they are saying actually don’t make a complete sense.

·        Give them the appropriate diet

·        Keep their place clean

·        Don’t act like they disgust you. This goes for those who do not have the capacity to send their elderly ones special homes where caregivers give them proper care.

·        If you older person who might be your parent or a loved are with caregivers at care-home, try to visit quite often.

·        Show them love because that’s what they need the most. Everybody desires to love and be loved.

The following are some of the tips you should consider when taking care of the elderly:

1.     Must sure you visit them Often. I have stated this before and if you don’t do this, their minds won’t be at rest. When they desire to see you, show up. Do not tell them that you’re too busy to come see how they are faring.

2.     Get their medications checked. Another way to ensure they get the need care is by checking their medications. See that the proper medications are administered as prescribed by the doctor or physician

3.     If you’re too busy and you don’t seem to have the whole time for an elderly, make sure you hire help. Most of the hired helps do their job quite well because they are being paid and if you falter the terms of agreement, they may seem to stop work or not give them the proper care they need.

4.     Make some modifications in the home

5.     Talk about their finances.

6.     Another thing is to get them involved when giving them the needed care. They should be involved in the decision making.

7.     Ensure that you install some safety gadgets at home. You may also like this article here
